Why I Feel Awkward at VW Meets

So the above is a pretty accurate representation of what a typical VW meet in my area looks like. VW people should be my people, but the vast majority of time, we’re left with nothing to say to each other. Most of the conversations go like this:

“Blah blah blah stance blah blah turbo blah blah bags blah mods blah blah gonna buy a Golf R.”

Most treat the big girl with indifference, if they notice her at all. Some haven’t actually heard of the Phaeton. Others might ask things like “Does it have the W8?” or “It’s basically an A8, right?” And then there’s my favorite question: “What mods have you done?”

So I’ll putter around for a bit, looking over the rows of brand-new GTIs lowered on BBS rims, finish my coffee, and hit the road. So it goes.

You have described every single small-time car meet. Ever.

That’s because you don’t have a VW. You have a Rolls Royce with a VW badge.

I’d say try the rolls royce meets if I thought you were cool with that $5k minimum cover charge. Gotta keep out the plebs and all that.

I see your problem. The Phaeton was also not a very VW VW. By that I mean it slots way far above most models the company has ever made.

You forgot to remove the badges on some of them so it looks like the car has a cleft palate.

I felt the same way taking my wagon to Subaru meets...and it was a WRX, so I was still more conforming than some.

On that note, we once had a meet at a mall the same night as a local VW group, and the cars ended up lining up facing each other...it was like tuner West Side Story.

I’ve actually been to the Rolls-Royce Owners Club annual meet, back in 2006 in Darien, CT. Now those are some interesting people. One guy had a gorgeous blue Silver Wraith with coachwork by Franay that he had rescued from the Dominican Republic and spent six years restoring. Another fellow told me the story of his Rolls-Royce 20/25 — it had originally been owned by twin sisters who had a vaudeville act in the twenties. Their identical silver makeup kits still sat on the picnic tables in the back seat. Rolls-Royce people are endlessly entertaining.

If it makes you feel any better, you easily have the most interesting VW at any car meet. lol Unfortunately a lot of VW owners are new to the enthusiast community and have no idea what a Polo is.

Long live the land yachts!

The only Focus meet I went to was also like this. A long line of stancebros with newer STs, stancebros with older Focii, a couple token weekend autocross people, a couple people with really clean older cars, a couple people with Mustangs (because they moved up the food chain), and a couple of us weirdos with brand new unmodified cars (and in my case, no interest in modifying mine).

The only consolation is that it wasn’t like a Corvette meet.

I was having a similar thought about BMW forums. I posted on one seeing if anyone knew detailed specs on some sway bars. The only responses I got were:

Someone else who was looking at sway bars for their car, knew less than me, and asked me questions, which I tried to answer in similar terms as they were using.

A “do you even track day bro, I’m going to correct everyone who improperly uses the terms oversteer and understeer when describing suspension tuning” snob posting a Han Solo meme to call me out for improperly using oversteer and underteer in this context when I was only responding to the first person talking about oversteer and understeer.

The first person sorta kinda getting my explanation and saying “I just want to keep my car planted in this one sweeper I take at 130 mph,” presumably not on a track.

I’d be so stoked to see one. Glad to not be one of those VW people.

I too hate the “what mods have you done” question, even as a GTI owner. I find this is usually most often at the car club meets and not so much c&cs. My usual response is “paid for it and drive the pants off it when i can”.

I’m 45. When I went to a Miata meet a few years back, I was the youngest person there by about 20 years, which is about the opposite of what I expected. Almost all of the them were supercharged NC PRHTs.

I understand why asking that question about a Phateon is kinda silly. But why do you hate that question for your GTI?

I think it is just a reflex question when car people don’t have anything to talk about, almost the same as commenting about the weather.

Kinja'd!!! Jagvar > EL_ULY

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, but I feel like if I went to a Bentley meet (if there is such a thing), I’d be scoffed at and treated with disdain. Poor Phaeton doesn’t fit in anywhere. But then, that’s one of the reasons they didn’t sell too many of them.

Really? That’s a shame. I’ve never seen a Phaeton in person, so I’d be all over it. Heck, I might even gather the courage to ask you to unlock the door so I can look inside of it better.

I’m too awkwardly shy, so I’d probably fall in love with it at a distance from the seat of my Civic with all my friends being confused as to why.

I go to a local Tim Hortons (like dunkin donuts) where theres literally car meets every night, I’m too scared to talk to anyone that I don’t know. I went nuts over a Toyota Cressdia and a slammed Volvo 240 wagon, and my friends where mostly confused.

It’s not that i so much hate the question, but typically if that’s all that can be asked i feel like it’s some sort of weird ego check/dick measuring contest.
I could also nerd out and tell them i’ve done basic driver comfort mods, rear fog retrofit, vinyl badge inserts, led bulb swaps, but really that’s all simple stuff.

I see. I guess it depends a lot on the intention of the person asking the question and how the person receiving the question takes it. Tone and body language taken into account.

I do notice some people only ask the question because they want to respond to it. When I notice this, I stop answering and return the question. Then they go on a 10 minute monologue which I indulge; because whatever. You learn more from listening anyway.

Kinja'd!!! GTI Sprinks > My speed3 is happy
06/03/2016 at 12:27

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh absolutely. I think it largely depends on the audience. The local car club definitely features a younger crowd and that’s where it really shows through. Cars and coffee is definitely a more mature group. I find myself at the c&c more than the car club for this reason.

Dude, GTI people are not our tribe. Neither are the aircooled crowd. Even when I had my original modified Phaeton (stage 1 chip) everyone yawned at the 20HP gain (for $800 it was not what you call a deal) and it looked exactly like you described. Even at most larger VW meetups where I’ve taken the Phaeton, no one gives a crap.

(Had same experience taking a 3000GT VR4 to a Mitsu meetup...full of Evo’s and also then no one gives a crap about VR4s despite being a much better car)
